10 Winter Gear Must Haves

10 Winter Gear Must Haves

Have you ever heard someone say “when you have the right clothes, you don’t feel the cold as much?” I don’t know about you, but this sentiment has proven more and more true over the years. Especially, when I lived in Boston in my mid-twenties. I learned just how important having the right clothes can be!

I’ve rounded up my top 10 winter gear must haves that I know I can’t live without below. Whether you’re off on a ski adventure, dog sledding or just walking around outside, I can guarantee you won’t be cold with any of these items!

Winter Jacket

If you buy anything, buy a good winter jacket! Trust me, nothing compares! I have always preferred the brands The North Face or Columbia for mine over the years. They are both a slightly more pricey brand, but it is worth the investment. If you choose to purchase from a different brand, make sure your jacket is waterproof, windproof and has a hood. You wouldn’t want to get stuck outside in the snow and wind without these features!

Winter Boots

Similar to a good winter jacket, waterproof boots will make your life (and vacation) much more enjoyable. There is nothing like wearing wet, cold socks to make you realize the importance of waterproof boots! My go-to brand has always been Sorel and these duck-style boots. They are also a little pricey, but they’re great quality and last for years before needing to be replaced.

Hat, Scarf and Gloves

Rounding out my top 3 winter gear picks are hats, scarves and gloves. I love a good beanie and I have found that my fleece-lined mittens actually keep my hands warmer than regular gloves. A long scarf can also come in handy for keeping your neck and chest area warm, while remaining stylish.

Thermal underwear or layering pieces

If you are traveling to a destination that is known to be very cold (think negative degree temperatures), then I suggest you invest in some thermal underwear. Layering a lightweight long-sleeve shirt with some leggings under your clothes is also a good alternative. Adding additional layers will help retain body heat, which will in turn help keep your limbs warm.

Neck Gaiter

Similar to a scarf, I’ve worn neck gaiters when I need additional warmth around my neck. If you’re going to be outside for long periods of time, such as, while skiing or dog sledding, they will help protect your face and neck from the cold conditions.

Wool socks

Warm, wool socks are an additional important item to make sure you pack when heading to a cold climate. As I mentioned above, I have first hand experience with what it’s like to have cold feet and it is not fun at all!

Ski Pants or Waterproof Pants

Waterproof pants or as I call them ski pants, will definitely come in handy if you are partaking in outdoor winter activities. I pair them with leggings or thermal underwear and I am good to go for the whole day! Keep in mind, there are different types and fits for both men and women. I have always found that men’s fit me better because I am very tall.

Sweaters

You will definitely want to bring long sleeve shirts or sweaters with you on any winter vacation you take. They’re always a great layering option under jackets and will keep your arms warmer than a t-shirt.

Jeans

Jeans are another travel item you can’t go wrong with on a winter vacation. Not only are they both comfortable and stylish, if it’s really cold outside, you can throw on a pair of leggings or tights underneath of them to stay warmer.

Hand and Toe Warmers

For those of us who still need an additional bit of warmth to our hands, body or toes, HotHands will be your new best friend! Just open the one you want, shake it and place it in your boot, glove or under your hat. They’ll keep you feeling warm for hours. It’s as simple as that!
