Scotland is known for many things. Whiskey, Loch Ness, the Highland Games, hiking and men in kilts, just to name a few. However, I was most excited to visit this beautiful country because of the books and tv show, Outlander. The history of Scotland is far reaching and I loved having the chance to immerse myself in the culture.

Begin your Scottish adventure in Inverness. Situated in the more northern part of the country, this region is brimming with history. You will want to visit Culloden, a battlefield where the 1745 Jacobite Rising came to a tragic end. All of the large clans have headstones dedicated to the many lives lost – yes, including the Frasers!

From there, head west and make your way to the Isle of Skye. Along the way, stop at Eilean Donan Castle. This 13th century castle is said to be the most photographed castles in all of Scotland. Sitting on its own island, its not hard to see why. After you have roamed the castle grounds, continue on to the Fairy Pools. The walk to the Fairy Pools is 2.4km (1.5 miles) or about 40 minutes. However, it was the drive back through Portree that was the best part of the trip. The sunset was absolutely stunning!

For my fans reading this of the Outlander show – make sure to visit some Standing Stones. While Clava Cairns is not the real Craigh Na Dun located right outside of Inverness, its fun to pretend! Additionally, any trip to Scotland cannot be complete without trying to catch a glimpse of its famous sea monster. Although I didn’t spot Nessie, the beauty and vastness of the loch surprised me and should certainly be on your itinerary.

Now that you have experienced the Highlands, its time to drive south to the capital city of Edinburgh. Along the way, stop at the Singleton Distillery, right on the outskirts of Inverness for a whiskey tour before making your way to Duone Castle. Another Outlander inspired stop, this 14th century castle has one of the best preserved great halls in all of Scotland.

After leaving Duone Castle, you’ve almost made it to Edinburgh! The big city might be a shock after your stay in the Highlands, but there is so much to do and see. Make sure to include a trip to Edinburgh Castle, a walk down the Royal Mile, the Scotch Whiskey Experience, the Palace of the Holyroodhouse, and Arthur’s Seat. My favorite views of the city are from Calton Hill and it’s worth the short walk uphill to see them!

It is one of the most hauntingly beautiful places in the world, the history is fascinating, the men are handsome and the whisky is delicious.
