Big Sky, Montana, the half point if you are traveling to Yellowstone National Park from Bozeman, has so much to offer. While its known as a ski resort town, you can also enjoy hiking, shopping, dog sledding, and trying to spot all the different kinds of wildlife that call this mountain town home.
Begin your adventure with an easy hike to Ousel Falls. Situated less than 10 minutes from the heart of Big Sky, this trail will take you alongside the South and West Forks of the Gallatin River. At only 1.6 miles long round trip, this stunning hike takes you to multiple stopping points so that you can view the river, where it ultimately ends at the falls. If you’re visiting during winter, the falls become a block of ice perfect for ice climbing, while in summer it makes a beautiful place for a picnic.
If hiking is not your cup of tea and you rather spend your time relaxing, look no further than the Santosha Wellness Center. They are your one stop shop for massages, facials and my favorite activity, yoga!
No trip to this region is complete without going to America’s First National Park, Yellowstone. There, you have the chance to see many different types of wildlife and explore the thermal basins. The most famous being, of course, Old Faithful. If you visit in winter, hop on a Snow Coach tour with Yellowstone Vacation Tours for a unique and fun way to get around the park.
If you would prefer something different to the traditional downhill skiing or snowboarding, try cross country skiing. Andrea, with Big Sky Adventure Tours, was very patient with me as she taught me the ins and outs and helped me up each time I fell!
Wintertime is also the perfect chance to spend some quality time with your very own team of Alaskan huskies. Gliding through the mountains with the team from Spirit of the North, is an experience you’ll never forget. When you’re ready to take a break from the adventures this area has to offer, head towards downtown Big Sky for some great food, drinks and shopping.
Get lost in Montana, where the mountains call you home.
