Mount Dora
Central Florida is home to so many attractions. Whether you are a thrill seeker, animal lover, professional shopper or nature explorer, we have it all. But, sometimes I get tired of hearing about Disney, Universal Studios, or Seaworld. It’s why I created this series – completely dedicated to exploring and highlighting other areas of Central Florida.
In this installment of my A Tank Away Series, I will be visiting the city of Mount Dora. This is one my favorite small towns in Central Florida. Mount Dora is filled with nature walks, fantastic restaurants, live entertainment, year-round festivals and makes it a great place to visit any day of the week!
Why visit Mount Dora?
Mount Dora has a very interesting history. Legend says that the large lake upon which the city grew, is named after Ms. Dora Ann Drawdy. She came to the area in the mid-1800s and befriended the federal surveyors. Then, in 1846, the surveyors named Lake Dora for her and years later in 1883, the small, growing town was named for the lake.
Mount Dora today is now home to more than 13,000 residents. However, it still retains its small town charm. You can find many historic buildings dotting its streets, as well as antique and speciality stores. But, I think what this city is most known for are its special events throughout the year. There are eight major annual events that bring thousands of visitors. They include the Annual Christmas Lighting Festival, the Antique Spring Show, the Mount Dora Arts Festival, and the Sailing Regatta. If none of these appeal to you, don’t worry, there are others! For example, Mount Dora hosts many Halloween and Fall Festivals and, of course, their Annual Scottish Highlands Festival.
The festival scene is great, but I love also love their restaurants and parks. Palm Island Park is definitely my favorite. It’s a short walk from the downtown area, and takes you on a boardwalk through mangrove trees. I’ve spotted many different kinds of wildlife while walking around there and it’s always so peaceful. After I’ve worked up an appetite, I have my choice of where to eat. From an English Pub, to Cuban restaurants, to fine dining establishments, there is not shortage of places to eat. I have yet to try one that I don’t like!
What to do you say? Are you ready to visit yet? I hope the answer is yes. You won’t regret a spending any time here!
Visiting Mount Dora
Location: Mount Dora is located about 35 minutes northwest of downtown Orlando. When you get into the area, parking is mostly on the street. There is one small parking garage and a few parking lots, but if you choose to park in one of those, you may have to walk pretty far to your destination. They are all not located close to the downtown area.
