The Art of Afternoon Tea
From Bermuda to Canada to the Republic of Ireland to Cruise Ships and to England itself, I have had the chance to appreciate Afternoon Tea in each destination. Is it just me or is there something sophisticated and somewhat fancy about it? Or is that the American in me?
I want to take the chance to explore what afternoon tea is. So that you can fall in love with it as much as I have. It doesn’t always have to take place somewhere fancy. A fancy hotel or restaurant. The best afternoon tea is one with friends and family. Enjoying a nice cuppa, eating the most delicious treats and catching up with one another.
What to expect?
Afternoon Tea is a British tradition of sitting down mid-day to enjoy tea, sandwiches, cakes and scones around 4pm. I learned that originally, the tea was for ladies who wanted to climb the social ladder in the 1800s. It has since become a social event for upper-class society.
High tea, however, is something completely different. During the 18th and 19th centuries, traditional high tea was a necessary meal and not one of indulgence.
Nowadays, afternoon tea has evolved to include more than just tea. In some cases, it has become an experience in of itself. But, what can you expect when you book (or serve) your own? You will have a selection of teas to select from to drink. While you’re sipping your beverage of choice, your tiered tray of yummy treats will arrive!
Typically you will be provided with a selection of finger sandwiches, scones with cream and preserves, and a variety of cakes and pastries. As I had mentioned, afternoon tea has evolved slightly. On some menus, you have the option to have a glass of champagne for a Champagne Afternoon Tea. Or, my personal favorite, enjoy a curated city tour while eating a delicious spread of treats.
I’ve come to learn that the art of Afternoon Tea is whatever you make it to be. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy it. So, get your friends and family together and plan yours. Make sure to let me know how it went in the comments below!
